Concealed leaks are patient. A pinhole in a concealed hot water line can weep for six months before the first stain appears — and by then the water has usually travelled somewhere misleading. These are the six signs we ask about on every leak-tracing call, roughly in the order they tend to appear.
1. A water bill that creeps without reason
Compare your last six bills. Usage drifts with the seasons, but a steady month-on-month climb with no new appliances or occupants is the classic first symptom. A pinhole leak at mains pressure wastes hundreds of litres a day — silently.
2. The meter test: five minutes, zero tools
Turn off every tap and water-using appliance, then watch your water meter. If the fine-flow indicator (the small star or triangle wheel) still turns, water is leaving the system somewhere. This single check settles "do we have a leak" before anyone lifts a tile.
3. A warm patch on the floor
If your home has concealed hot water piping, a persistently warm patch of tile or parquet almost always marks a hot-line leak below. It is also the cheapest kind to find — thermal imaging spots it in minutes.
4. Musty smell in one room only
Damp trapped inside a wall cavity or under flooring feeds mould long before visible staining. If one bathroom, bedroom or cabinet smells persistently musty despite cleaning, trust your nose over your eyes.
5. Paint or plaster misbehaving
Bubbling paint, powdery plaster and skirting boards that darken at the bottom edge are all signs of water wicking through masonry. In Malaysian double-brick walls the entry point can be a full room away from the symptom.
6. Water pressure that quietly dropped
A leak big enough to steal pressure is a leak in a hurry. If the shower upstairs has weakened over weeks — and cleaning the shower head changed nothing — have the line checked promptly before the weep becomes a burst.
